Anchorage Alaska Fishing Trips
Why Every Anchorage Fishing Trip Should End on the Kenai
Most people searching for Anchorage Alaska fishing trips don't realize that Anchorage itself isn't where the big salmon action is. The city is a starting point — not the destination. The Kenai Peninsula, 2.5 hours down the Seward Highway, is where the world-class fishing actually happens.
I've had clients fly in from all over the country. My standard recommendation: land in Anchorage, rent a truck, drive the Seward Highway (one of the most scenic roads in North America), and meet me on the water in Soldotna the next morning.
What to Expect on the Drive South
- Anchorage → Portage: ~1 hour. Turnagain Arm views, Dall sheep on the cliffs, bore tide if you're lucky.
- Portage → Cooper Landing: ~45 min. The Kenai River starts here — you'll see it before you even meet me.
- Cooper Landing → Soldotna: ~45 min. Pull over at any of the lower river access points to get a feel for the water.
Day Trip vs. Multi-Day Kenai Packages
If you're staying in Anchorage, a day trip to fish with me is absolutely doable — but I always recommend at least two nights in Soldotna. Fishing two consecutive days dramatically improves your odds of connecting with a trophy King or limiting out on Sockeye. I can recommend cabins and lodges near the launch site that work with our schedule.
