Kenai River Fly Fishing
The Kenai River has two distinct personalities for the fly angler. Above Skilak Lake, it's a crystal-clear, wadeable freestone river that produces trophy Rainbow Trout year-round on dry flies, streamers, and egg patterns. Below the lake, it transforms into a big-water salmon highway where the sockeye flip technique and swung coho flies produce some of the most explosive freshwater strikes you'll ever feel. We guide both.
Trophy Rainbows
The upper Kenai ecosystem produces Rainbows exceeding 30 inches. Catch-and-release only, handled with care.
Fly-Only Sections
Portions of the upper river are restricted to unweighted flies and single barbless hooks — true fly fishing water.
Sage & Simms Outfitted
We fish with Sage rods and supply quality fly gear — you don't need to bring a thing.
From the River
Two Rivers in One
The Kenai above Skilak Lake is a fundamentally different fishery than the lower river — and both are extraordinary for the fly angler. The upper section rewards technical presentation and reading subtle seams. The lower sections demand a different skillset: understanding tidal influence, salmon behavior, and the particular rhythms of fish moving through gravel in big volumes. Our guides are specialists in both environments.
The Kenai River by Section
Upper Kenai
Kenai Lake → Skilak Lake
The gem of the system for trout anglers. Gin-clear water, technical Rainbows, and stacked Dolly Varden following the salmon. Accessible only by drift boat through the non-motorized sanctuary — the quietest, most rewarding float on the peninsula.
Middle Kenai
Skilak Lake → Soldotna
Sockeye country. The Kenai Flip is a fly-fishing technique at its core — weighted egg patterns, precise dead-drifts, and a sharp strip-set when the line hesitates. When the run peaks, you can flip a dozen reds an hour from the bank.
Lower Kenai
Soldotna → Cook Inlet
September coho on the swing. Chrome-bright Silvers stacked in the lower river tidal pools are among the most willing fly-rod fish in Alaska — they chase articulated streamers with reckless aggression. Few experiences match it on a single-hand rod.
Our Catch & Release Commitment
All Rainbow Trout fishing on the Kenai is strictly catch-and-release under ADF&G regulation, and we enforce this without exception. Fish are landed quickly, kept horizontal and in the water, photographed without delay, and released with a strong revival before they swim away. We also barbless all trout flies by default. These fish are too valuable to only catch once.
Gear & Equipment
Sage Rods & Quality Reels
We rig Sage fly rods across all our trout and salmon float trips. From 5-weight single-hands for upper-river Rainbows to 8-weight rods built for big coho and sockeye — the right tool is already in the boat. All flies, leaders, and tippet are included.
Drift Boats Built for Fly Fishing
Our Willie drift sleds are purpose-configured for fly casting — no obstructions, clean casting lanes from the bow, and guides who position the boat to maximize your presentation angle. Back-rowing into holding water and holding position is a skill set our guides have spent years developing on this specific river.
