Russian River Confluence Sockeye Salmon Fishing Guide
The Russian River confluence in Cooper Landing, Alaska is one of the most famous sockeye salmon fisheries in the world. Anglers from across the globe gather here each June and July to experience the thrill of flipping for salmon in clear mountain water.
Two Distinct Sockeye Runs
The Russian River receives two distinct runs of sockeye (red) salmon. The early run starts in early June and peaks around June 15–25, offering some of the earliest salmon action on the Kenai Peninsula. The second, much larger run arrives in mid-July and runs through mid-August.
Sanctuary Boundaries & Dates
The confluence is protected by the Russian River Sanctuary area. The sanctuary is closed to all sport fishing from May 1 through July 14 to protect staging salmon. It opens to fly-fishing only on July 15.
Accessing the Confluence
Most anglers access the confluence via the Russian River Ferry at the Sportsman's Landing boat launch, or by hiking down the Russian River Trail from the Russian River Campground. Parking fills up early during peak season.
